Podernuovo a Palazzone – Bulgari Wine

Quanti di voi alla parola Bulgari immaginano e sognano orologi, gioielli preziosi, profumi o alberghi super lusso? Anche la mia mente ha sempre associato questo nome a qualcosa di irraggiungibile. O meglio aveva, perché adesso il nome Bulgari mi riporta ai miti pomeriggi autunnali di molti anni fa, quando osservavo il mio amato zio che vendemmiava. Ricordo ancora la cantina inebriata dal forte odore del mosto… Mi prendeva in braccio per farmi osservare dall’alto i chicchi d’uva che fermentavano in antichi tini di legno. Vi chiederete come possa il nome Bulgari riportare a ricordi campestri e nostalgici. La risposta è Podernuovo, azienda vinicola di Paolo e Giovanni Bulgari. Una tenuta che si estende per ben 20 ettari sulle colline toscane, a Palazzone di San Casciano dei Bagni.

È una bellissima domenica soleggiata, una di quelle giornate ideali per passeggiare. Dopo aver osservato per un po’ lo scorrere di un torrente nei boschi, “scompaio” tra gli immensi vigneti di Podernuovo. Accedo poi alla casa principale da un vialetto di cipressi in salita, tipica entrata toscana che mi riporta alla mente quanto unica sia l’Italia. La casa è in cima alla collina e guarda dall’alto l’intera tenuta. Un’opera d’arte ecosostenibile, progettata dall’architetto Massimo Alvisi dello studio Alvisi Kirimoto & Partners in cui vetro, acciaio e legno sembrano quasi confondersi alla natura circostante. Linee essenziali, trasparenze e riflessi che uniti alla bellezza naturale del paesaggio rendono la tenuta un vero e proprio gioiello! Al piano di sotto c’è la cantina, con tutti i macchinari per lavorazione del vino mentre al piano di sopra si trova l’alloggio con un immenso terrazzo panoramico con vista a 360° sui vigneti.
Ci accomodiamo tutti attorno a un lungo tavolo di legno rettangolare in una stupenda sala di vetro! Il lato destro affaccia sull’esterno, il sinistro sulle centinaia di barrique posizionate al piano di sotto. Giovanni, seduto a capotavola, da perfetto padrone di casa, ci racconta la storia della tenuta. Il vigneto, rimasto abbandonato per molti anni, fu acquistato nel 2004 da lui e da suo padre, con la sfida di restituire l’originaria bellezza al luogo e quella ben più ardua, di produrre vini eccelsi. Descrive i vitigni: Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon e Merlot e sottolinea le tecniche avanzate ed ecosostenibili con le quali avvengono la raccolta dell’uva e le varie fasi della produzione del vino. Tutto nel massimo rispetto della natura.
Il pranzo a base di prodotti biologici “a km zero” preparato dalla signora Marisa è divino, ma i veri protagonisti sono Therra, Sotirio e Argirio. I tre diamanti di Podernuovo! Difficile preferire un vino all’altro poichè tutti raffinati e intensi. Apprezzo in particolare Sotirio, il cui nome deriva dal capostipite della famiglia Bulgari: Sangiovese puro, di colore rosso brillante, sapore intenso e asciutto con retrogusto speziato e fruttato. Classico vino che stappereste per le occasioni speciali o, per i più pretenziosi, anche tutti i giorni.
Devo ammettere, oltre ad esser brava con le pietre preziose, la famiglia Bulgari ha anche capito come gestire le più difficili e capricciose uve toscane, riuscendo a produrre vini di prima qualità. Ma questo non mi stupisce molto. Quello che più mi colpisce invece è l’amore e l’umiltà con cui Giovanni si dedica alla tenuta… Lo osservo girare tra i vitigni, spogliato dalla sfarzosità del suo nome. Sembra conoscere ogni grappolo d’uva ed ogni pezzo di terra che calpesta. Ora tutta la frenesia ed il chiasso del mondo sembra così lontana e senza senso in confronto alla quiete della natura. Questa è l’essenza di Podernuovo a Palazzone, un luogo capace di riportarmi a quei semplici e autentici pomeriggi autunnali di tanti anni fa.

“To how many of you the word Bulgari reminds dream watches, precious jewelry, perfumes or super luxury hotels? My mind always associated this name to something unreachable and glamourous. Not anymore, as now the name Bulgari brings me back to the autumn afternoons of many years ago, when I used to watch my beloved uncle harvesting grapes. I still remember the cellar smelling the strong odor of must… He used to pick me up to let me look at the grapes fermenting in old wooden casks. You may wonder how can the name Bulgari bring back to nostalgic and rural memories… The answer is Podernuovo, winery of Giovanni and Paolo Bulgari. An estate that stretches for 20 hectares on the hills of Tuscany, in Palazzone San Casciano dei Bagni.
It is a beautiful, sunny Sunday, one of those days perfect to ramble. After looking for a while at the flow of a stream in the woods, l “get lost” within the vast vineyards of Podernuovo. I then access to the main house by an uphill cypress walk, typical Tuscan entry that reminds me how unique Italy is. The house is on the top of the hill and overlooks the whole estate. A work of art environmentally sustainable, designed by Massimo Alvisi of studio Alvisi Kirimoto & Partners, where glass, steel and wood seem to be in perfect harmony with the surrounding natural landscape. Clean lines, transparencies and reflections that, along with the natural beauty of the surrounding environment, make the estate a real gem! Downstairs is the wine cellar, with all the machinery to process the wine, while upstairs is the house with a huge panoramic terrace with a 360 ° view over the vineyards.
We sit all around a long wooden table, in a beautiful rectangular glass room! The right side looks on the outside, on the left hundreds of barrels are positioned downstairs. Giovanni, sitting at the head, perfect host, tells us the history of the estate. The vineyard, left abandoned for many years, was bought in 2004 by him and his father, with the challenge of returning the original beauty to the place and, much more difficult, to produce excellent wines. He describes the vines: Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and emphasizes the advanced and environmentally sustainable techniques by which the grape harvest and the various stages of wine production. Everything in the utmost respect of the nature.
The lunch of organic products “zero km” prepared by Ms Marisa is divine, but the real stars are Therra, Sotirio and Argirio. The three diamonds of Podernuovo! Difficult to prefer a wine to another as all are refined and intense. I particularly appreciate Sotirio, whose name comes from the founder of the Bulgari family: pure Sangiovese, bright red color, intense flavor, dry and fruity with a spicy aftertaste. A perfect, classic wine for special occasions only or, for the more pretentious, for a daily sip.
I must admit, in addition to being excellent in treating precious stones, the Bulgari family also figured out how to handle the most difficult and capricious Tuscan grapes, managing to produce premium wines. However, this does not surprise me much. What strikes me the most is the love and humility with which Giovanni is dedicated to the estate… I watch him stroll around the vines, stripped by the sumptuousness of its name. He seems to know every bunch of grapes, and every piece of land that he tramples. Now all the bustle and noise of the world seems so distant and meaningless in comparison to the quiet of nature. This is the essence of Podernuovo in Palazzone, a place that can bring me back to those simple and authentic autumn afternoons of many years ago.”
